Moving Tips

1.Planning

Most people are shocked to see how much stuff they actually have on the day of their move. Have a look at everything in your place and decide if it is time to get rid of anything. Also plan what order you are going to pack things and what you can do without.

2. Pre-packing

Start packing things that you won’t need for a while well in advance, like clothes, linen, books, etc. The more time you give yourself to pack the less stressful your move is going to be.

3. Furniture to empty

Basically, if it has a door or draw, it has to be emptied. Wardrobes, chest of draws and desk drawers must be emptied. avoid taping drawers shut as this may leave perminant marks on your furniture. Gas bottles and equipment such as lawnmowers must be empty before we carry them, as we cannot carry flammable liquids.

4. Pack in good boxes

Try to avoid overpacking boxes so they cannot be shut. Boxes like this cannot be stacked properly in the truck and will take longer for us to move. Also make sure you pack heavy items such as books in smaller boxes to avoid making them too heavy. Most storage companies will sell boxes of all sizes for all requirements.

5. Keep clear access

The closer we can park the truck to the entrance of your place the faster your move will be. It is also important to keep all entrances and walkways clear to save us having to move everything to get through.

6. Dismantling

Dismantle beds, mirrors from dressers, and other furniture items if you can. If you have trouble with anything don’t stress, our crew has all the tools required to take care of this for you. Losing small items, especially keys, is common when moving and is very frustrating. Keep all screws and bolts in bags and tape them to the inside of the furniture you took them off.

7. Fridges/Freezers

For your convenience, you may keep your fridge and freezers on and full until we ask you to empty them. However, it is important to remember that fridges and freezers should not be turned on for 2 hours after arriving in your new place.

8. Flat glass items

This includes plate glass, paintings, prints, table tops, and wall unit shelves. Simply leave them bare for us to handle. Never pack plate glass or glass front paintings in boxes.

9. Pot plants

Do not water them for a few days prior to the move. Not that it is hard in a drought!
